Welcome to The ACP Advocate,

Today's first article reviews ACP's call for aggressive action to keep the devastating effects of climate change from jeopardizing the health of people across the planet.

In its latest policy paper, published this week in Annals of Internal Medicine, ACP points to research that says climate change poses a "catastrophic risk" to advances in global health that have been attained over the past half-century. It's not just politicians, but physicians, too, who ACP wants to take action.

Today's second article notes that it's "appropriations season" on Capitol Hill, the time when Congress attends to the business of approving funding for the next fiscal year.

ACP made its priorities clear to the relevant appropriations subcommittees in the House and Senate through letters sent last week. ACP wants Congress to promote and protect primary care through federal appropriations. It also wants Congress to set aside sufficient funds to support health care via the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

In our final article, read ACP’s take on a piece in the March issue of Health Affairs. The HA article takes a hard look at some physicians’ recent changes and what they portend for the future of medicine. Written by Phillip Miller, vice president of communications for Merritt Hawkins, it analyzed data from the "2014 Survey of America's Physicians: Practice Patterns and Perspectives," which was conducted for the Physicians Foundation by Merritt Hawkins.

In our May 13 issue, we’ll cover ACP’s testimony to the Energy & Commerce Subcommittee on Health that also took place earlier this week. We shared ACP’s perspectives on what CMS, and the medical profession itself, needs to do to ensure that MACRA is implemented successfully and as Congress intended.

I look forward to seeing many of you soon at ACP’s Internal Medicine Meeting 2016 here in Washington. Be sure to stop by the Advocacy booth on the exhibit floor or at any of the meetings listed to the right.
